Ready-Mix UHPC – the New Normal

Are you ready for nationwide adoption of Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC)?

We’re at an inflection point in the concrete construction industry. Engineers, contractors, and regulators increasingly reach out to Cor-Tuf for specific project solutions and insights on UHPC implementation. They want to enhance traditional infrastructure without replacing the reliable methods and means of ready-mix concrete.

Cor-Tuf UHPC offers a longer service life, higher strength, and increased resiliency when compared to traditional concrete. Repair, rehabilitation, and new-build projects are realizing the benefits of UHPC, which include improved structural performance and long-term cost savings. Stakeholders are taking note and moving forward.

Let’s take a look at the latest trends.

Who Leads the Charge?

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) carries the regulatory banner for UHPC adoption. Backed by years of research in its Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, FHWA has promoted UHPC as a sustainable solution for bridge and highway projects. Federal and state transportation departments have followed suit, seeking to implement more widespread UHPC standards on public contracts.

As a case in point, Cor-Tuf recently completed two workshops with public officials. One was in Fort Miller, New York, and was attended by 60 members from the Vermont and New York State departments of transportation (Vermont DOT and NYSDOT, respectively). The other was held in Massachusetts and was attended by 45 MassDOT officials and representatives from seven civil contractors.

These sessions were to supplement FHWA’s guidance with Cor-Tuf’s experience and leadership in ready-mix, precast, and prestressed applications. Discussing project examples, design and construction standards, material testing, and specifications provided stakeholders with a deeper understanding of UHPC. Cor-Tuf has worked with dozens of other agencies and ready-mix partners in similar informational discussions, with the same positive outcomes.

People trust Cor-Tuf because of our track record. Cor-Tuf acquired a global license and US patent for UHPC in 2018, under sponsorship from the US Army Corps of Engineers. Since then, Cor-Tuf UHPC has established itself as a reliable benchmark for the industry. Our materials consistently meet technical requirements and work well with contractors in the field.

Approvals, Standards, and Cor-Tuf Specs

Recent regulatory approvals from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) have led to an increase in design guides that incorporate UHPC requirements. More DOTs and local jurisdictions are adopting standards, and contractors must be proficient with UHPC to participate in bids.

UHPC is appearing in more specifications because it offers superior qualities compared to traditional concrete. Its integrated steel fibers and impervious matrix result in exceptional strength and resistance to degradation over time, resulting in a service life of more than 100 years. UHPC requires no steel reinforcement and incurs lower maintenance costs over its lifetime. It offers an attractive solution to public planners seeking to avoid deterioration and meet sustainability goals.

Cor-Tuf UHPC has a 28-day compressive strength of 21 ksi, which is a whole order of magnitude above that of traditional concrete. Tensile and flexural properties are also superior, allowing structural engineers to reduce the need for rebar and rely on internal energy dissipation. Chloride and other environmental contaminants cannot penetrate UHPC because it lacks porosity. Bonding strength, as measured by ASTM C1583, confirms that the material’s matrix will retain its integrity.

As a result, Cor-Tuf UHPC is becoming the go-to solution for large concrete projects. Bridges have been the primary use case, but there are many more. Building foundations, unique structural members, and blast protection are a few other appealing applications that have been proven in the field and are drawing more attention. UHPC has numerous applications, and more stakeholders are becoming aware of its benefits.

How is Cor-Tuf UHPC Installed?

Traditional concrete construction is reliable because its installation methods are well understood and consistently applied. Decades of experience with familiar batching, delivery, placement, and testing have made concrete one of the most common construction materials. Both large and small construction firms benefit from central batching, local aggregate, and ready-mix delivery.

And herein lies the key to more widespread UHPC implementation. Cor-Tuf provides UHPC that is compatible with standard concrete equipment and techniques. It is fully ready-mix compatible, meaning the same batch plants and trucks can be used. Bulk deliveries can be performed in the same amount of time and installed with the same crew. Even the sand, cement, and most admixtures can be sourced locally. Cor-Tuf UHPC mixtures are easily incorporated into common implementation plans, whether from a silo or a super sack.

UHPC previously had a reputation for being onerous and resource-intensive. Contractors and authorities were hesitant to commit to what they did not understand. Some UHPC producers contributed to this perception by requiring specialized equipment, imposing heavy-handed oversight, and demanding unique materials. Some crews learned that lesson the hard way about unnecessary on-site mixing hazards and increased maintenance of traffic (MOT) obligations due to poor integration with their typical mixing strategy.

Cor-Tuf understands how the work gets done from experience on real projects. We’ve worked on them, learned from them, and we know how to avoid those construction headaches. We work with QA/QC managers, superintendents, foremen, and laborers to ensure installation is easy and well understood. We’ve seen firsthand how efficient UHPC projects can be when the supplier understands the reality in the field.

What UHPC Means for You

There will be more opportunities to participate in UHPC projects. Design and construction firms with reliable supplier relationships and familiarity with new standards will benefit the most, while those who ignore the latest trends risk missing out on opportunities. Will you be playing catch-up or will you be ahead of the curve?

Groups in the Northeast are expected to experience the most significant increase in UHPC standards and implementation in the short term. The greater New York City area is leading the way with specifications and RFPs, while New York State, Massachusetts, and other parts of New England are close behind. Nationwide adoption is underway, thanks to the participation of FHWA, USDOT, and AASHTO.

UHPC can become a profit center if approached correctly. When selecting a supply partner, ensure the material meets the technical standards considered by major authorities, in addition to aligning with your existing mobilization and execution strategies. Cor-Tuf exceeds specifications and seamlessly integrates with existing production facilities, local materials, and ready-mix operations.

You can get ahead of the competition by embracing UHPC. Improve your concrete operations with Cor-Tuf to achieve higher strength, more resilient materials, and reduced installation times.  Use your current ready-mix crews and see the results for yourself.

What Makes UHPC Ultra-High Performance

UHPC achieves its superior performance through a dense nano-scale matrix that is far less permeable than conventional concrete. This matrix is combined with steel fiber reinforcement, which provides exceptional ductility and crack resistance.

Though exact formulations and results vary by producer, UHPC generally incorporates a blend of Portland cement, sand, supplementary cementitious materials, chemical admixtures, and fibers – resulting in a material dramatically stronger, tougher, and longer lasting than traditional concrete.
